Color Grading Workflow: From Raw to Cinematic

Color grading is the final polish that transforms good footage into great visuals. This workflow will help you achieve consistent, cinematic results across your projects.

Starting with a Solid Foundation

Always begin with proper exposure and white balance in-camera. While you can fix many issues in post, starting with good footage makes the grading process much smoother.

Primary Corrections First

Adjust exposure, contrast, and color balance before moving to creative looks. This ensures your creative grade sits on a solid technical foundation.

Building Your Look

Use color wheels, curves, and HSL adjustments to create your desired mood. Remember that subtlety often works better than heavy-handed adjustments.

Matching Shots

Consistency is key. Use reference frames and scopes to ensure all shots in a sequence feel cohesive and intentional.

Final Polish

Add vignettes, film grain, or other finishing touches sparingly. The goal is enhancement, not distraction.
